Privacy Notice

1. Controller

1.1 The Scientist's Notebook (the "Publication") is published by Gradescale Mortelmans (the "Publisher"), a sole proprietorship (Einzelfirma) registered in Switzerland.

1.2 The Publisher is the controller of the personal data described in this notice (the "Privacy Notice"). The Ghost publishing platform operated by the Ghost Foundation ("Ghost") and the payment service provider Stripe ("Stripe") act as processors on the instructions of the Publisher.

1.3 Questions about personal data, and requests concerning the rights set out in clause 9, are addressed to the Publisher at legal@gradescale.fit, and not to Ghost or to Stripe.

2. Scope and Processing Model

2.1 This Privacy Notice describes how the Publisher processes the personal data of a person who holds a free or paid membership of the Publication (a "Member") and of other visitors to the website at the-scientists-notebook.com (the "Site").

2.2 The Publication is distributed to Members as an email publication (the "Newsletter"), and the Site makes interactive estimation tools (the "Calculators") available to Members and to other visitors.

2.3 The Site runs on Ghost, and most of the processing of personal data described in this Privacy Notice is performed by Ghost on the instructions of the Publisher.

2.4 The notice published by Ghost that describes the processing performed by Ghost is available at ghost.org/privacy.

3. Personal Data Processed and Purposes

3.1 The Publisher processes the email address of the Member, and the name of the Member where a name has been given. That data is processed in order to send the Newsletter subscribed to and, in the case of a Member holding a paid membership, to provide and to bill for that membership.

3.2 Ghost records by default whether an email sent to a Member was delivered and whether that email was opened.

3.3 Payment data relating to a paid membership is handled by Stripe, and the Publisher never sees or stores the card number of a Member.

3.4 Basic analytics about the use of the Site are collected by Ghost on the instructions of the Publisher.

4. Health Data

4.1 The Publication discusses health topics, but the Publisher does not collect health data. Nothing that a Member reads, clicks or calculates in the Publication is recorded by the Publisher as information about the health of that Member.

4.2 Values entered by a Member into a Calculator remain in the browser of that Member and are not sent to the Publisher.

5.1 The Newsletter is sent on the basis of the consent of the Member, which is given by subscribing and may be withdrawn at any time through the unsubscribe link contained in any email.

5.2 Account data and payment data are processed for the performance of the contract for a paid membership.

5.3 Accounting records are retained because a legal obligation of the Publisher requires the Publisher to retain them.

6. Processors

6.1 The processors engaged by the Publisher, the processing that each of them performs and the notice published by each of them are set out in the table in this clause 6.

7. Cookies

7.1 Cookies set on the Site, and other data stored in the browser of a visitor, are dealt with separately in the Cookie Notice at /cookies/ (the "Cookie Notice").

8. Retention

8.1 The member record of a Member is retained for as long as the membership continues, and it is removed from Ghost when the Member unsubscribes or asks for the member account to be deleted.

8.2 Payment records are held by Stripe under the retention policy of Stripe, and the Publisher retains only the minimal transaction record that Swiss accounting obligations require.

9. Rights of the Data Subject

9.1 As a data subject, you may: (a) ask the Publisher for a copy of the personal data that it holds about you; (b) ask for that data to be rectified; (c) ask for that data to be erased; and (d) unsubscribe from any email through the link contained in that email.

9.2 A data subject in the European Economic Area or in the United Kingdom also has the right to object to processing and the right to complain to the competent data protection authority.

9.3 In Switzerland, a complaint may be made to the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (the FDPIC).

9.4 Unsubscribing stops the emails sent to the Member, and the member record of a Member is deleted in full on a request made to the Publisher.

10. Amendments and Contact

10.1 Where this Privacy Notice changes, the Publisher will publish the new version with a new version number and date, and will keep the previous version available.

10.2 Questions about this Privacy Notice, and requests made under clause 9, are addressed to the Publisher at legal@gradescale.fit.
