Theoretically, combining caffeine and sodium bicarbonate should improve performance because they target different physiological limitations: caffeine stimulates the central nervous system to lower perceived effort, while bicarbonate buffers extracellular acidity to delay muscle fatigue. However, current data indicates that activating these distinct pathways simultaneously rarely produces a linear, additive benefit. The interactions are complex, with evidence suggesting that the systemic pH changes caused by bicarbonate may potentially alter caffeine metabolism or neural responsiveness, effectively dampening the stimulant's intended impact.
